Is any quality lost?

None in this step. PNG stores exactly what the decoder produced. If the WEBP was lossless — WEBP has a lossless mode used for graphics and screenshots — the result is a perfect copy. If it was lossy, that compression already happened when the file was made and converting does not compound it, which is precisely why PNG is the safer choice for an image you will edit further.

Why is my PNG bigger than the WEBP?

Because WEBP compresses better in both of its modes — around 25% better than PNG losslessly, and far better than that on photographs where its lossy mode discards detail entirely. Converting gives that efficiency back in exchange for a format everything opens.

Should I convert to PNG or JPG?

PNG when the image has transparency, or is a logo, icon, diagram, screenshot or anything containing text — JPEG would leave permanent fringing on those edges and fill the transparency with white. JPG when it is a photograph, where a lossless file is large for no visible gain.

Why is there no quality setting?

Because PNG is lossless, so there is nothing to trade away. A quality slider chooses how much detail to discard, and PNG discards none — the file is simply the image as decoded.

What about animated WEBP files?

You get the first frame. WEBP can carry animation as GIF does and ordinary PNG cannot, so a still image is the predictable result.

WEBP is not one format but two modes sharing an extension. Lossy WEBP, derived from the VP8 video codec, is what sites serve for photographs. Lossless WEBP is a completely separate compression scheme aimed at the same content PNG handles — logos, icons, screenshots, flat colour and text — and it typically beats PNG by around a quarter.

Which mode a file uses is invisible from the outside, and it determines what this conversion is doing. From a lossless WEBP, converting to PNG is a straight re-container: nothing is lost, because nothing was lossy to begin with. From a lossy WEBP, PNG preserves exactly what the decoder produced, without adding a second generation of compression on top of the first.

Either way the result is a PNG, which is the format to choose when the image has transparency to keep or hard edges that JPEG would damage.

How to convert WEBP to PNG

    Each image is decoded by the browser's own WEBP decoder and written as PNG. There is no quality setting, because lossless compression has nothing to trade.

Transparency, which is usually the reason

Both WEBP and PNG carry a full alpha channel, and it is preserved through this conversion rather than being flattened. That is the single most common reason to pick PNG over JPG here: a logo downloaded from a site as WEBP keeps its transparent background, so it can be placed on any colour without a white box around it.

JPEG cannot do this at all — it has no alpha channel, so converting the same logo to JPG fills the transparency with white and there is no getting it back.

If you have a WEBP that is meant to sit on a coloured background, on a slide, or in a document, PNG is the conversion you want.

What to expect from the file size

From a lossless WEBP
The PNG will be somewhat larger — lossless WEBP typically compresses around 25% better than PNG on the same content. Nothing is lost; the file is just less efficiently packed.
From a lossy WEBP of a photograph
Much larger, often several times. Lossless compression finds repetition, and photographs have almost none, so the compression that made the WEBP small is removed and nothing effective replaces it.
From a lossy WEBP of a graphic
Usually a modest increase. Flat colour compresses well losslessly, so a logo or icon converts without much penalty.
Dimensions
Unchanged in every case. Only the encoding changes; nothing is resized or resampled.

When PNG is right, and when it isn't

Choose PNG when the image has transparency, when it is a logo, icon, diagram or screenshot, when it contains text, or when it is going into an editing workflow where it will be saved repeatedly and each JPEG save would compound the loss.

Choose JPG instead when the WEBP is a photograph you simply need in a widely-supported format. A photographic PNG is large for no visible benefit, and JPEG at a sensible quality is what every piece of software expects a photograph to be.

The quick test is what the image looks like. Flat colour, sharp edges and text mean PNG. Continuous tone and gradual variation mean JPG.

Animated WEBP

WEBP can hold an animated sequence in the way GIF does. PNG, in its ordinary form, cannot, so an animated WEBP converts to its first frame.

There is an animated variant of PNG called APNG, but browser support for creating one is not something a page like this can rely on, and producing a still frame is both predictable and what most people converting an animation to a static format actually want.
