Can you unlock a PDF if I don't know the password?

No. If the document is encrypted, the password is what decrypts it — without it there is genuinely nothing to read, and that is true of every tool, not just this one. What does not need a password is removing permission restrictions from a document that already opens freely, and this tool does that immediately.

Why did it unlock my file without asking for anything?

Because that file was permission-restricted rather than encrypted. It opened for everyone all along; it just carried flags asking readers to block printing or copying. There is no password involved in removing those, which is a fair indication of how much protection they offered.

Is my password sent anywhere?

No. The file never leaves your device and neither does the password — decryption happens inside your browser tab. The password is also deliberately never written to the saved session, so a restored session asks you for it again rather than keeping a secret in browser storage.

Is it legal to remove PDF restrictions?

On your own documents, or ones you have permission to modify, yes — it is your file. On someone else's, the ease of removing a flag does not grant you any right you did not already have, and copyright and confidentiality obligations still apply to the unlocked copy.

How do I change a PDF's password instead of removing it?

A locked PDF is locked in one of two quite different ways, and which one you have determines whether you need a password to unlock it. If the document prompts you before it will open, its contents are encrypted and only the password can decrypt them. If it opens straight away but refuses to let you print, copy or edit, it carries permission flags instead — a restriction recorded in the file that readers choose to honour, with nothing encrypted behind it.

This tool removes both, and it tells you which kind you have when you add the file. Documents with permission restrictions only are unlocked immediately. Documents that need a password ask you for it, and cannot proceed without it.

It is worth saying clearly what this is not: there is no password cracking here. If a document is encrypted and you do not have the password, no amount of processing will open it, and any tool claiming otherwise is either guessing at weak passwords or lying to you.

The two kinds of lock

The tool distinguishes these automatically when you add the file, so you do not have to know in advance which one you are holding.

Needs a password to open: The document has a user password and its contents are encrypted. Nothing can be read — not the text, not the images, not even a thumbnail — until the correct password decrypts it. You must supply the password.
Opens, but restricts what you can do: The document has an owner password and a set of permission flags. Its contents were never hidden; the flags simply ask readers to disable printing, copying or editing. Removing them needs no password, because there is nothing to decrypt.

Only unlock what you have the right to unlock

Removing restrictions from a document is an ordinary and legitimate thing to do with your own files — a bank statement you need to extract figures from, a report you protected yourself years ago, a scanned contract that arrived locked for no reason anyone can now remember.

It is not legitimate on someone else's document, and the fact that permission flags are technically easy to remove does not make removing them lawful. Copyright, licence terms and confidentiality obligations all continue to apply to a file whose restrictions you have stripped. Use this on documents you own or have permission to modify.

What the unlocked copy contains

The output is built by copying the decrypted pages into a fresh document, which is deliberately more robust than simply re-saving the original — some PDFs carry structures that do not survive being written back out after decryption, and rebuilding sidesteps them.

Page content comes through intact: text stays selectable, images keep their resolution, fonts and vectors are unchanged, and annotations attached to pages travel with them. What is gone is the encryption dictionary and the permission flags, so the copy opens without a prompt and allows printing, copying and editing.

You can re-protect the result at any time with Protect PDF, which is the usual route when you need to change a document's password rather than remove it: unlock with the old one, protect with the new one.

If it doesn't work

A rejected password is almost always genuinely the wrong password — check for a capital letter or a trailing space picked up when copying it out of an email. There is no distinction between "nearly right" and "wrong" to report.

If you don't have the password at all, the honest answer is that the document cannot be opened. Your options are to ask whoever produced it, or to look for the source it was generated from. Password recovery services work by guessing, and only succeed against passwords that were weak to begin with.

A file that fails to load before any password is requested is usually corrupt rather than protected — often truncated by an interrupted download. Fetch a fresh copy of the original.
