What does this tool extract?

It pulls out the original images embedded in your PDF — photos, logos and graphics — rather than a picture of each page. To turn whole pages into images, use the PDF to Images tool instead.

In which format are the images saved?

You can save them as PNG, which keeps transparency, or as JPG for smaller files with an adjustable quality setting.

Why did I get fewer images than I expected?

Logos and backgrounds drawn as vector shapes are not images, so they cannot be extracted. Tiny graphics are also skipped when they fall below the size limit you set.

Is the same image extracted twice if it repeats?

No. An image used on several pages is stored only once in the PDF, so you get a single copy of it.

How do I download everything at once?

Use 'Download all (.zip)' to get every extracted image in a single archive.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No, the PDF is opened and its images are decoded locally in your browser.

How is this different from PDF to Images?

This extracts the actual picture files embedded in the document, at their original resolution and without the page around them. PDF to Images renders each complete page — text, layout and all — into a new picture at a resolution you choose. Use this one to recover a photograph or a logo; use that one when you want the page itself.

Why did one image come out in several pieces?

Because that is how it is stored. Some PDF producers slice large images into tiles or strips and reassemble them on the page, so extraction returns the tiles. If you need the picture whole, render that page with PDF to Images instead.

The tool found no images in my PDF. Why?

Most likely the document genuinely has none — pure text and vector graphics contain no embedded pictures. Charts, diagrams and many logos are vector artwork rather than images, so they look like pictures on screen but aren't stored as any.

Should I choose PNG or JPG?

PNG unless you have a reason not to: it is lossless, keeps transparency, and reproduces the stored image exactly. JPG is smaller for photographs but turns transparency white and adds a second round of compression to images that were already compressed inside the PDF.

Can extraction improve a blurry image?

No. It returns exactly what the document stored, so an image that was compressed or downscaled before being placed into the PDF comes out that way. What extraction does recover is resolution that rendering would have thrown away — often the original image is much larger than it appeared on the page.

There are two quite different things people mean by getting images out of a PDF, and this tool does the one that is usually wanted but rarely offered. It pulls out the actual image files embedded inside the document — the photographs, logos and scans that were placed into it — at their original resolution, rather than taking a picture of each page.

The difference is substantial. A photograph placed into a report might be 3000 pixels wide even though it occupies a quarter of the page; rendering that page at normal resolution gives you a version a fraction of that size, with the surrounding text baked in. Extraction gives you the original picture, on its own.

How to extract images from a PDF

  1. Add the PDF

    Drop it in or choose it. The document is scanned for embedded images, which takes longer than simply opening it — every page's drawing instructions have to be walked to find them.

  2. Review what was found

    Each image is shown with its dimensions and the page it first appears on. An image used on every page, like a header logo, is listed once rather than fifty times.

  3. Choose PNG or JPG

    PNG preserves everything exactly, including transparency. JPG produces smaller files for photographs but cannot store transparency and re-compresses what it saves.

  4. Download

    Take individual images, or all of them at once as a ZIP with the files numbered by the page they came from.

Extracting images versus rendering pages

A scanned document is the case where they nearly coincide: each page is one big image, so extracting gives you the scans at their true resolution, which is often higher than you would have chosen when rendering.

Why the results sometimes look odd

Extraction reflects how the document was actually built, and documents are built in ways their authors never intended anyone to see:

One picture arrives in pieces
Some producers slice a large image into tiles, or split a scan into strips, and reassemble them on the page. Extraction returns the pieces, because the pieces are what is in the file. Rendering the page with PDF to Images is the way to get it whole.
Images you can't see on the page
A picture may be cropped by its container, hidden behind other content, or placed off the visible area. The full stored image is extracted regardless of how much of it was displayed — which is occasionally a useful reminder that cropping in a PDF usually hides rather than removes.
Odd-looking masks and separated layers
Transparency is often stored as a separate greyscale mask alongside the colour data, so you may see a black-and-white silhouette next to the picture it belongs to.
Nothing found at all
A document that is purely text and vector graphics contains no images to extract. Charts and logos are frequently vector artwork, not pictures — they look like images and are not.

PNG or JPG

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, so it reproduces the stored image exactly. It is the safer default, particularly for logos, diagrams and anything with a transparent background, and it is what you want if the images will be edited afterwards.

JPG is much smaller for photographic content, but it cannot represent transparency — transparent areas become white — and it re-compresses the data, which for an image already stored as a JPEG inside the PDF means a second generation of loss. Choose it when file size matters more than fidelity and the content is photographic.

Note that extraction cannot recover quality the document never had. An image compressed heavily before being placed into the PDF comes out exactly as compressed as it went in; saving it as PNG preserves the artefacts faithfully rather than removing them.

Being able to extract an image says nothing about being allowed to use it. Photographs, illustrations and logos in a document generally belong to someone, and pulling them out of a PDF is technically simple and legally irrelevant to who owns them.

Extracting your own images from your own documents — recovering originals you no longer have, or getting scans back out of a file — is straightforward. Reusing images from someone else's document needs the same permission it would need from any other source.
