Why do images I save from the web come out as .webp?
Because most sites now serve WEBP — it compresses noticeably better than JPEG at the same visual quality, so adopting it made pages faster. Saving an image gives you whatever the site sent. The trouble only begins outside the browser, where support remains uneven.
Will converting lose quality?
A little, since both formats are lossy and the image is decoded and re-encoded. At the default quality of 85 it is very hard to see, because the second pass mostly discards detail the first pass had already removed. What it cannot do is improve a WEBP that was already saved at low quality — those artefacts are part of the picture now.
What happens to transparent areas?
They become white. JPEG has no alpha channel at all, so transparency must be flattened onto something, and white is the sensible choice — left alone those pixels would come out black. If the transparency matters, convert to PNG instead, which keeps it.
Why is the JPG bigger than the WEBP?
Because WEBP exists to be smaller. It compresses roughly a quarter to a third better than JPEG at comparable quality, so converting to JPEG gives that advantage back. You are trading file size for the certainty that the image will open in whatever you are sending it to.
Can I convert an animated WEBP?
You get the first frame. WEBP can hold animation the way GIF does; JPEG holds a single image, so the sequence has nowhere to go.
Should I convert to JPG or PNG?
JPG for photographs — that is what its compression was designed for. PNG for logos, icons, diagrams, screenshots and anything with transparency or text, where JPEG would leave permanent fringing around the edges and fill the transparent areas with white.
If you have ever saved a picture from a website and found a file nothing would open, it was almost certainly a .webp. Google introduced the format in 2010, built on the intra-frame coding of its VP8 video codec, and it compresses about a quarter to a third better than JPEG at comparable quality. Sites adopted it in bulk, so it is now what most of the web serves.
The awkwardness is that WEBP is universal inside browsers and patchy everywhere else. Older versions of Photoshop will not open one. Plenty of upload forms reject the extension. Print shops, document systems and a great deal of desktop software still expect JPEG.
This converts one to the other: decoded with your browser's own WEBP decoder — the same one that displays it on a page — and re-encoded as JPEG at a quality you choose.

Lossy to lossy, and whether it matters
Most WEBP files on the web are lossy, and JPEG is lossy, so this conversion decodes one lossy image and encodes another. That is a second generation of compression, and in principle it compounds.
In practice, at the default quality it is very hard to see. The two formats discard detail in broadly similar ways — both work in the frequency domain on blocks of the image — so the second pass is largely throwing away detail the first pass already removed. What it does not do is *restore* anything: a WEBP that was saved at low quality will produce a JPEG that looks just as rough, because the artefacts are now part of the picture.
The case to be careful about is an image you will convert, edit, and save again. Each round adds a generation. If that is the plan, convert to PNG instead, do the editing losslessly, and make the final export the only lossy step.
What changes in the conversion
- Transparency
- Flattened onto white. WEBP supports an alpha channel and JPEG has none at all, so transparent pixels have to become something — white rather than the black they would otherwise turn. If the image needs its transparency, convert to PNG.
- Animation
- Reduced to the first frame. WEBP can hold an animated sequence much as GIF does; JPEG holds one image.
- Lossless WEBP
- Becomes lossy. WEBP has a lossless mode, used for graphics and screenshots, and converting one of those to JPEG discards that quality permanently — PNG is the correct destination for a lossless WEBP.
- Dimensions
- Unchanged. Nothing is resized or resampled; only the encoding changes.
- File size
- Usually larger. WEBP's whole purpose is better compression than JPEG, so the same picture as a JPEG at comparable quality is typically 25–35% bigger.
JPG or PNG for a downloaded WEBP?
It depends on what the WEBP contains, and you can usually tell by looking.
A photograph — a product shot, a hero image, anything continuous-tone — should become a JPEG. That is what JPEG is for, and the file will be a sensible size.
A logo, a diagram, an icon, a screenshot, or anything with transparency or hard-edged text should become a PNG. JPEG would leave permanent fringing around every edge and would fill the transparency with white.
