What's the fastest way to fix a double-sided scan?

For a short document, drag the thumbnails here. For a long one, use Split PDF in even/odd mode to separate the fronts from the backs, reverse the backs if you flipped the stack, and interleave them — that avoids dragging dozens of pages one at a time.

Can I rotate pages at the same time as reordering them?

Does rearranging affect quality?

Not at all. Pages are copied into a new order rather than re-rendered, so text stays selectable, images keep their original resolution and vector artwork stays sharp. The file size stays essentially the same.

Do bookmarks still point at the right places?

Not necessarily. Bookmarks and internal links target page positions rather than content, so after reordering they point at whatever now sits in that position. Annotations and form fields, which are attached to pages, do move correctly with them.

Reordering pages is the fix for documents that arrived in the wrong sequence, and they arrive that way constantly: a double-sided scan made in two passes, a report whose appendix ended up ahead of its conclusion, a merge done in the wrong order, a bound document fed through a sheet feeder back to front.

The operation is a copy in a new order. Pages are transplanted into a fresh document in the sequence you set, so nothing is re-rendered — text stays selectable, images keep their resolution, and the pages themselves are byte-for-byte what they were.

Fixing a two-pass double-sided scan

This is the most common reason people arrive here, and it has a specific shape. Scanning a double-sided stack on a single-sided feeder gives you all the fronts followed by all the backs — pages 1, 3, 5, 7 and then 2, 4, 6, 8. Worse, the backs are usually in reverse order, because you flipped the whole stack over.

Reordering by hand works but is tedious past a few sheets. The quicker route on a long document is to use Split PDF in even/odd mode to separate the two halves, put the reversed half the right way round, and then interleave them — which is a merge rather than a rearrange.

For a short document, dragging the thumbnails here is faster than any of that.

What reordering changes

Page content is untouched, and annotations, comments and form fields attached to a page move with that page. What breaks is anything that referred to positions.

Printed page numbers stay where they were drawn — move page 7 to the front and it still says 7. There is no way around that without re-rendering the pages, which would sacrifice exactly the fidelity this tool exists to preserve. If a document is going to be circulated with visible numbering, fix the order at the source that generated it.

Bookmarks and internal links resolve to page positions rather than to content, so a table of contents pointing at page 12 will still point at whatever now occupies position 12. On a heavily cross-referenced document, that is worth checking before sending it on.

Rotation is a separate property

A page's rotation is recorded in the file as its own attribute, independent of its position, so rotating a page here changes how it displays without touching the content drawn on it. The rotation is saved into the output and every reader honours it.

This matters for scans of mixed material — a portrait report with a landscape table dropped in sideways. Rotating the offending pages makes the document readable without scaling or re-rendering anything.

Rotation and reordering are applied together in one pass, so a scan that came out both out of sequence and sideways can be fixed in a single operation rather than two.

Long documents

Every page is rendered so you can see it, which is what costs time and memory on a document of several hundred pages. The rearrangement itself is cheap — pages are copied, not redrawn.

If a very long document is sluggish, splitting it into sections, ordering each, and merging them back is more comfortable than dragging thumbnails through hundreds of positions.

The file and your current arrangement are saved to your browser's storage as you work, with a session id in the page URL, so a reload or an accidentally closed tab doesn't cost you the ordering you had built up.
