Is a signature made this way legally binding?

For most agreements, yes. Electronic signatures are recognised under eIDAS in the EU, the ESIGN Act and UETA in the US, and comparable laws elsewhere, provided the signer intended to sign. A specific minority of documents — some court filings, property transfers and notarised instruments — require a certificate-based digital signature or a wet signature instead. Check the requirements for anything consequential.

What's the difference between this and a digital signature?

This produces an electronic signature: a visible mark showing agreement. A digital signature is a cryptographic certificate bound to the document's exact contents, which proves it hasn't been altered and displays a verified badge in readers. That requires a certificate issued to you by a certificate authority, so it can't be produced by any browser-based tool.

Can someone remove my signature from the document?

Not casually. The signature is drawn into the page content rather than added as an annotation, so it can't be selected and deleted in an ordinary reader. It isn't cryptographically sealed, though — if you want stronger assurance, use Protect PDF to deny modification, and keep the message you sent it with.

My drawn signature looks nothing like my real one. What can I do?

That is usually the mouse, not you. Drawing with a finger or stylus on a phone or tablet gives a far more natural line. Alternatively, sign a sheet of paper in dark ink, photograph it in good light and upload that — it produces the most authentic result of the three methods.

Can I send the document to someone else to sign?

Not from here. Sending, tracking and audit trails require a server holding your document, which this site deliberately doesn't have. Sign your copy, email it and ask them to return a signed copy — or use a dedicated e-signature platform when you need certified proof of who signed and when.

Most documents that need signing need an electronic signature: a mark you apply to a page indicating that you agree to it. That is what this tool produces. You draw, type or upload a signature, place it where it belongs, and the result is a PDF with your signature rendered into the page.

It is worth distinguishing that from a digital signature, which is a different thing with a similar name — a cryptographic certificate bound to the document that proves it hasn't been altered since signing. That requires a certificate issued to you by a certificate authority. Under the eIDAS regulation in the EU and the ESIGN Act in the US, ordinary electronic signatures are legally valid for the large majority of agreements; the cryptographic kind is required for a specific minority.

Signing here happens entirely in your browser. The document and the signature never leave your device, which matters given that the things people sign are contracts, offer letters and financial forms.

How to sign a PDF

Most signature blocks want more than a signature — a printed name, a date, initials, a ticked box. Text and checkbox fields handle those, so the whole block can be completed in one pass.

Three ways to make a signature

Draw: Sign with the pointer or, on a touchscreen, your finger or a stylus. A finger on a phone gives a far more natural result than a mouse does — if the mouse version looks like a child's handwriting, that is the input device rather than you.
Type: Enter your name and choose a face. Clean, consistent, and perfectly valid as an electronic signature — a typed name applied with intent to sign is exactly what the legislation contemplates. It looks less like a handwritten mark, which some recipients prefer and others don't.
Upload: Photograph or scan a signature you've written on paper and upload it. This gives the most authentic result. Sign in dark ink on white paper in good light, and if the background comes out grey, raise the contrast in an image editor before uploading.

Electronic versus digital signatures

The distinction is genuinely important if you are signing something significant:

Electronic signature: A mark applied to a document to show agreement — what this tool produces. Legally recognised for most contracts in the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia and many other jurisdictions. Its evidential weight comes from the surrounding context: who sent it, from what address, when, and what was agreed.
Digital signature: A cryptographic operation using a certificate issued to you after identity verification. It binds your identity to the exact bytes of the document, so any later change invalidates it, and readers display a verified badge. Needed for court filings in some jurisdictions, certain property and tax documents, and qualified signatures under eIDAS. It cannot be produced without a certificate authority, so no browser tool can offer one.

Making a signed document harder to tamper with

The signature is drawn into the page's own content rather than added as a movable annotation, so it cannot be dragged off or deleted in a reader. That is a meaningful step up from pasting an image as a comment, but it is not cryptographic proof — someone determined could still edit the page.

If you want to make alteration harder, run the signed file through Protect PDF and deny the modification permission, or set an open password. Both are conventions that cooperative software honours rather than mathematical guarantees, but they raise the bar and signal intent.

Keep the email or message that transmitted the signed document. In practice, disputes about electronic signatures turn on that surrounding record far more often than on the mark itself.

Requesting a signature from someone else

This tool signs a document you have. It does not send it to a counterparty, track whether they opened it, or collect an audit trail — those are the features of a signature-request service, and they require a server holding your document, which is precisely what this site is built not to do.

For a straightforward agreement, the ordinary route works: sign your copy, email it, and ask the other party to sign and return theirs. For high-value contracts where you need certified proof of who signed and when, a dedicated e-signature platform is the right tool, and its audit log is what you are paying for.
