Why won't my iPhone photos open on Windows?

Because they are HEIC, which uses the HEVC codec, and HEVC is patent-encumbered — Microsoft charges for the decoder extension and most other software simply omits it. The format is genuinely better than JPEG and commercially awkward, which is why converting remains necessary years after it became the iPhone default.

Does converting lose quality?

A little, since both formats are lossy and the image is decoded and re-encoded. At the default quality of 85 it is invisible on a photograph. It matters if you convert the same image repeatedly, or if the picture is heading into an editing workflow with several saves ahead of it — convert to PNG in that case and let the final export be the only lossy step.

What quality setting should I use?

85 unless you have a reason otherwise. It is what most software defaults to because it is the point where photographs stop looking any better and files keep getting bigger. Use 95 for images you will print or edit; 70–80 for the web.

Is my location data removed?

Yes. EXIF metadata, including the GPS coordinates iPhones attach by default, is not carried into the JPEG. That is usually what you want when sharing photos — a picture taken at home otherwise carries your address in it.

What happens to Live Photos?

You get the still frame. A JPEG holds one image, so the paired video, and likewise any depth map or burst frames the HEIC carried, are left behind.

Can I convert my whole camera roll at once?

Yes — add as many files as you like and they are converted one after another on your device. Since nothing is uploaded there is no per-file limit and no queue, though a very large batch is bounded by your own machine, and the software HEIC decoder used on non-Apple platforms is not fast.

This is the conversion that fixes the most common photo problem there is: an iPhone photo that will not open on someone else's computer. Since iOS 11 the iPhone has saved photographs as HEIC, which stores the image with HEVC — the codec used for 4K video, applied to a single frame — and produces files around half the size of JPEG at the same quality.

The format is excellent and almost nothing outside Apple's ecosystem opens it. HEVC is covered by patent pools that browser and operating-system vendors have largely declined to license, so Windows charges for the decoder extension, most photo software has no support, and upload forms reject the files. That is a licensing situation rather than a technical one, and it is not going to resolve itself.

JPEG is the opposite: thirty-five years old, unencumbered, and readable by every device, website and application in existence. Converting HEIC to JPEG trades some efficiency for the certainty that the picture will open.

How to convert HEIC to JPG

  1. Add your .heic or .heif files

    Drop in as many as you like. Whole camera rolls are the normal case here.

  2. Set the quality

    The slider defaults to 85, which is the usual sweet spot — visually indistinguishable from the original for almost any photograph, at a fraction of the size of a higher setting. Push it to 95 for images you will edit or print; drop it towards 70 when you need small files for the web.

  3. Convert

    Each image is decoded and re-encoded as JPEG on your device. Where the browser cannot decode HEVC natively — which is everywhere except Apple platforms — a WebAssembly decoder does the work in the page.

  4. Download

    Take the images individually or all at once. The originals are untouched.

Two lossy formats, one re-encode

Worth being straight about, because it is the one real cost. HEIC is lossy and JPEG is lossy, and this conversion decodes the first and encodes the second — so a small amount of quality is lost that would not be lost converting to PNG.

In practice, at the default quality of 85 this is invisible on a photograph. JPEG's compression was designed around exactly the kind of detail photographs contain, and a single generation of it at a high setting is not something the eye picks up.

It becomes visible if you convert repeatedly — a JPEG re-saved through several rounds of editing does soften noticeably — or at low quality settings on images with hard edges. If the photo is going into an editing workflow with several saves ahead of it, convert to PNG instead and let the final export be the only lossy step.

Choosing a quality setting

95 and above
Near-transparent quality with large files. For images you will edit further, print at size, or archive as your only copy.
85 — the default
The setting most software uses for good reason: no visible loss on typical photographs, at roughly half the size of 95. Right for sharing, emailing and uploading.
70–80
Small files with mild softening on close inspection. Fine for the web and for images that will be displayed small.
Below 70
Visible blocking and artefacts. Only worth it when file size is the binding constraint.

What happens to the extras

A HEIC file can hold more than one picture. Live Photos pair a still with a short video, portrait shots carry a depth map, and burst sequences hold several frames. JPEG holds exactly one image, so what you get is the main photograph and the rest is left behind.

EXIF metadata — camera model, exposure, timestamp and the GPS coordinates iPhones record by default — is not carried into the converted file. For photographs being shared this is usually welcome, since holiday and household photos otherwise travel with the coordinates of where they were taken. If you need the metadata preserved for an archive, converting through Apple's own Photos export keeps it.

JPG or PNG from a HEIC?

JPG for photographs, which is nearly always what a HEIC contains — it is the format your recipient's software expects, and its compression is designed for exactly this content.

PNG when the HEIC is a screenshot rather than a photograph, when the image is going into editing where it will be saved repeatedly, or when you need a lossless copy. The trade is size: a photograph stored losslessly can be five to ten times larger than the JPEG.

About the HEIC format

.heic is the raster image format MPEG introduced in 2015. It is published as an open specification under the name ISO/IEC 23008-12, so a file can be read without the program that wrote it.
