Why choose PNG over JPG for PDF pages?
Because PNG is lossless and handles hard edges cleanly, and documents are made of hard edges. JPEG's compression leaves faint permanent fringing around every letterform, which is invisible on a photograph and quite visible on a page of text. Use JPG when the pages are mostly photographs; use PNG for text, tables, forms and diagrams.
Why is there no quality setting?
Because PNG compression is lossless — there is nothing to trade away. A quality slider in JPEG chooses how much detail to discard; PNG discards none, so the only lever on file size is the resolution, which changes how many pixels there are rather than how well each is kept.
What resolution should I use?
144 DPI, the default, for screen use — twice the PDF's native scale, which is what makes text crisp. 300 DPI for print, where an A4 page becomes about 2480×3508 pixels. Above 300 the visible improvement flattens out while memory use rises, and the rendering runs on your own device.
Is the page reproduced exactly?
Yes. It is drawn by the same rendering engine that displays a PDF in a viewer, so fonts, vector graphics, images, colours and positions all come through precisely. This is the only conversion here that preserves appearance exactly — the document targets rebuild the content and lose the page design.
Can I search or select the text afterwards?
No. The output is an image, so the text becomes part of the picture and is no longer machine-readable — including to screen readers. Where you need the words as words, PDF to Text or PDF to Word extract them, and there is nothing stopping you from doing both.
Is my PDF uploaded to convert it?
No. The pages are rendered inside your browser tab using the PDF engine already there, and the images are written on your device. Nothing is transmitted.
PNG is the right format for a page of a document, and the reason is worth understanding rather than taking on trust. PNG compression is lossless — every pixel that comes out is the pixel that went in — and it is particularly efficient on exactly the content documents are made of: flat colour, sharp edges, thin lines and text.
JPEG, its usual alternative, is the opposite on all counts. It is lossy, and its compression discards detail around hard transitions, which produces faint but permanent ringing around every letterform. On a photograph that is invisible and the file savings are enormous. On a page of text it is visible and irreversible.
So for rendering a PDF page — text, tables, diagrams, forms — PNG is the format that keeps it looking the way it looked. And rendering is the one conversion on this site that reproduces a page exactly, because the page is drawn by the same engine a PDF viewer uses rather than reconstructed from its contents.

Why there is no quality slider
The JPEG conversion has one and this does not, which occasionally reads as an omission. It is not.
A JPEG quality setting chooses how much detail to throw away — that is what makes the file smaller, and it is a genuine decision with a genuine cost. PNG's compression discards nothing, so there is no equivalent choice to offer. A PNG is simply the page, exactly.
The only lever on file size is the resolution, which changes how many pixels there are rather than how faithfully each is stored.
Resolution in practice
- 72 DPI
- The PDF's own coordinate scale, one pixel per point. Fine for thumbnails and contact sheets; text will look soft.
- 144 DPI — the default
- Twice native, which is what makes text render crisply on modern displays. An A4 page comes out around 1191×1684 pixels. The right choice for anything viewed on screen.
- 300 DPI
- The print standard. An A4 page becomes roughly 2480×3508 pixels and prints with no visible pixelation. Use it when the image is going onto paper.
- Higher than 300
- Rarely worth it. Visible quality plateaus while memory use climbs sharply, and since the page is rendered on your own device this is where a browser tab starts to struggle — particularly on a phone with a large page.
What PNG pages are good for
Anything that needs a page to look exactly right and be treated as a picture. Putting a page into a slide deck, embedding a form into a document, posting a page to a website, sending a preview of a layout, or attaching a page where the recipient should see it rather than edit it.
PNG's transparency support also matters here where a page has any — it is preserved rather than flattened onto white, which JPEG cannot do at all.
The cost throughout is that the output is pixels. Text in a PNG cannot be selected, searched, copied or read by a screen reader, and a document rendered to images has stopped being machine-readable. Where you need the words, PDF to Text or PDF to Word extract them instead, and where you need both, converting twice is entirely reasonable.
